The Tate Gallery
The Tate Gallery is sometimes criticised for presenting exhibitions of earlier twentieth century British artists instead of undertaking more shows of contemporary art. Such criticism fails to take account of the essential character of the Gallery. Its contemporary and its historical functions are complementary, and in each field we are able to open up territory which has been insufficiently explored.
In tribute to an impressive and very individual painter who died two years ago at a great age the Gallery is delighted now to present the first exhibition of Sir Cedric Morris's work to be held at any public gallery in London. We hope that in the 1980s Morris's painting will again become as well known to a national audience as it was between the world wars, and that this time it will remain so. The Gallery was very pleased that with the purchase of three fine pictures in 1981 the first representation of Morris in its permanent collection took place in his lifetime. We are grateful to his sister, Miss Nancy Morris, for her subsequent gift of a fourth attractive painting, and for her helpfull interest in this exhibition.....
